物語はパブロ・ピカソの有名な絵画『ゲルニカ（Guernica）』が導く一つの真実と隠された陰謀を巡り、ピカソと彼の愛人ドラ・マールがスペイン内戦中を生きた過去と現代に生きるMoMA(ニューヨーク近代美術館）のキュレーターである八神瑤子がある目的のためにゲルニカを求めて奮闘するストーリー。
レビュー
物語はピカソやドラ・マールの視点で書かれた過去と現在を生きるキュレーター八神瑤子の視点で書かれ、過去と現代をいったりきたりする。章（チャプター）は30ないし40ページ程度でまとめられており比較的読みやすい。後半にさしかかるまで物語は結構ゆっくり進むのでサスペンスのカテゴリーにしてはわくわくして衝動的にページをめくるようなハラハラ感はあまり得られなかった。
ピカソがたった一枚の絵で人々に伝えようとした反戦のメッセージ、ファシズム政権に屈しずフランスを守ろうと戦い続けた姿勢は作中に何度かでてくる有名な名言からひしひしと伝わってくる。『この（ゲルニカ）作者はお前たち（ファシズム政権だ）』と。
主人公であるキュレーターがそのピカソのメッセージを守ろうとする気持ちが作品を読んでいけばいくほど強く心に残る。戦争という大きな過ちを繰り返し犯してきた人類の愚かさと弱さをゲルニカは人々に伝えつづけていて、戦争時代を生きたことのない私は過去の話に耳を傾け、二度と同じことが起こらないように平和の大切さを心に持ち続けて伝えていかないといけないと、この作品を読んで改めて感じた。

キュレーター拉致事件はあまりに唐突な印象があり前後の文とのつながりが欠けているような印象があったのでサスペンスとして完璧に構築されたストーリではなかった。そしてETAのボスの妻がなぜ人質に命をかけてまで身の上話をしたのか、ボスである夫との関係性を詳しくしていればテロ組織の人間の気持ちがもう少しわかったのかなと思う。実際にかかれているのはマイテの自供のみで理解し共感や感情をキャラクターに構築するには少し足りなかった。
全体としての印象は、★★★★☆（４/５）
500ページ近くあるためストーリーを見失うと退屈だけど、構成はきっちりされていて読みやすい。
スペイン内戦、第二次世界大戦の基礎知識があればより深くたのしめるが、美術に関して知識がなくても十分に楽しめる。

She has published other art fiction books as well but this book is by far the best .
The story is about a curator of MoMA , Yoko Yagami who is now on a mission that includes to bring Guernica to New York to display it in a place for an important puropose.
Along the journey , she gets herself in a trouble and finds out that an extremist group in Basque also tries to get Guernica claiming it belongs to them.The story goes back and forth in different time period, the one in past where Piccaso and Dora Maar had lived under the terrible situation of a civil war and the one where Yoko lives in modern society in New York.
I really enjoyed reading the story . The message Picasso and Guernica are trying to convey is absolutely blew my mind and tought me some good lesson .Having said that It's wee bit repetitive and a plot twist is somewhat unnatural to me which is very disappointing. I appreciate the concept of the theme of this book so I wish some plot twists were more carefully and naturally interwoven into the stoy flow so that I could be pleasantly surprised by what's coming to later since it is a kind of a point to read a suspense story.
Overall, if you are looking for an engaging suspense art fiction novel, then this book is not for you but if you like historical fiction or interested in arts or Piccaso in general, then it is entertaining and gripping.
