アートフィクション以外の原田マハさんの小説の中で今の所、この奇跡の人が一番お気に入りの小説です。
内容：明治２０年 ある男爵の長女 れんは、視力・聴覚とも幼い頃の病気によりなくし、発話もできない６歳の少女であるが、使用人や家族から人間として扱ってもらえず、けものの子として蔵に閉じ込められる生活をしていた。そこへ去馬 安という女性がれんの教育係として屋敷に招待される。案も弱視でありいずれ視覚を完全に失うとされている。れんが秘めている可能性を開花させてその光を見出すために二人で必死に踠き、考え、学んでいく。
ストーリー自体は,かの有名な、ヘレン・ケラーとアン・サリヴァンの物語が津軽で場所を変えて再現されているがあんとれんが出会った明治20年は1887年でヘレンとサリヴァンが出会った時と同じ年になる。この本にはオリジナルストーリーがありより一層ストーリーは感情的である。当時の家族制度や社会通念、障碍者に対する差別を扱っている。令和になった今の時代にも障碍者に対する差別やそこからうまれた犯罪は記憶に新しくまだ差別はなくなっていないが、明治の日本はさらにひどかった。
そんな中、れんに怪我をさせられるも、決して見捨てる事無く、れんの可能性を信じて手探りであらゆる方法を考え根気強く教育を行った安（あん）の自分や他人を信じる強さ、愛情深さにとても感動した。れんの母である、よしも、物語の前半と後半でかなり強く成長していて、母として愛情を注ぐ手段を安より学び、安がもたらした幸せや感動はれんだけでなくその家族の人生に光を当て、とてつもなく大きなものだったと感じる。
兄である辰彦は、妹の存在により縁談が何度となく破談になった過去のため妹に対し嫌悪感を示しているが辰彦の立場を考えるとそう感じるのも無理はないと感じる。だとしても彼の言動や行為は度が過ぎてるのもあり正当化はできないが。。
ヘレン・ケラーの物語を既に読んでいれば、重なる点や異なる点を比較しながら読むのもまた楽しい。アメリカと日本で文化、場所は違えど同じ時代の同じ障碍を抱えた女性達を追うことで学ぶこと、感じることはまた違う。本当に素晴らしい作品。自分を信じる、人を信じる大切さや、諦めない精神力が可能にする物の凄さを教えてくれる。
Good Reads での評価は☆★★★★（５/４）としました。
Story: The book is based on a story of Helen Keller and her teacher Ann Sullivan in 1887.
The story follows a 6-year-old- deaf - blind girl who can't speak at all and a teacher with her eyes severely impaird . For the record the setting is in Aomori Pref in the Meiji era (around 1868-1912).During this time, discrimination against women and handicapped people was way worse than that in nowadays thus it was pretty normal of other family members to lock their handicapped family member up in an isolated store house since such disabled people were thought to be embrassing and shameful and needed to be hidden from public eyes. It wasn't untill 1950 that the custom was abolished ,which was just 70 years ago.
Speaking of my thought of this book, it is so enlightning , moving, heartwarming, and thougth-provoking.
I love most of characters in the story and Oh my gosh !
I can't stress enough how much Ann ( the teacher/the protagonist)gives me power and inspiration. She is incredibly strong and loveable and her story telling has firmly proved that we are capable of basically anything!!
No matter what happen, we just gotta keep believing in ourselves and being strong because it is ultimately the only way to make an impossible POSSIBLE.
I gave 4 out of 5 on GRs . ☆★★★★
I promise it won't disappoint you .
ALSO, if you'd like to learn upper - intermediate or advanced Japanese, it is a good material to read. I presume it can be a wee bit tricky untill you get used to old japanese words (For instance , 女中・廃藩置県・大名etc) .
FYI A bit of knowledge of history in the Meiji era will help you to understand the story as a whole.
